Re: THE WARZONE
Good Evening Manu,
Yes, the earliest version of this vehicle was called Hornisse....my model is the later version so that is why I used the term Nashorn
in its description. The two were virtually identical except for small improvements and changes in equipment stowage. This is the same for the model I did of the Elephant (Tank Destroyer) which was initially named Ferdinand. It is unclear to me why the Germans changed the names of these vehicles post production but if I had to guess I would say "Der Feurher" might have had something to do with it.

Re: THE WARZONE
Rick,
Thank you for clarifying that.
As for the Jagdpanzer Elefant, the story is simple.
Why should it have been called Ferdinand ? Because of its creator, Ferdinand Porsche. Ferdinand's model was not selected; Henschel won the contract to manufacture it by modifying elements of this Panzerjäger.

Re: THE WARZONE
That is correct Manu,
....for the Tiger Tank competition Henschel was the victor but there was a compromise. The Turret from the Porsche design was used on the Henschel chassis, thereby allowing Porsche a foot in the door in the manufacturing process. Such was not the case in the Ferdinand/Elephant project...it was all Porsche along with Alkett and Nibelungenwerk. Interesting side note: The final drive on the Ferdinand was gas/electric...could this be the first hybrid??...naw it was just two V10 gas engines, powering twin generators, that powered the electric motors used for the final drive. Final note, they were'nt very effective in combat.
Have a good evening,
Rick

Re: THE WARZONE
Hello Everyone, I got this Mk. II Panzer as a cast resin kit from my friend Paul Heiser at Lakewood Military Models in Southern California. It was one of my first resin kits and I did not spend much time in developing it so I must do another one someday or tear this one down for a rebuild.
